Made by hand in the Bronx

Daysi Fernández, founder of Daysi Collection, in an emerald blouse, chin resting on her hand at the back of a wooden stool.

01The seamstress

Needle to thread at twelve.

Daysi Fernández is Honduran, and Garífuna, and she put needle to thread at twelve years old. Her father worked a spinning wheel, and its bobbin is among her clearest memories. “Sometimes I’d sneak to watch him work into the morning hours.”

Her Garífuna roots run through the styles, the patterns and the textiles the collection is built from, and every piece is developed on research and careful technique. Beyond the work she is a wife, a mother, a daughter and a sister, and those commitments carry the same weight. With love and patience, the collection grows one piece at a time.

Inside the atelier

The dress doesn’t make the woman, the woman makes the dress. A woman should not have to change herself to fit her clothes.
